Welcome to the Partnership for Prince George’s County

We are an innovative, collaborative philanthropic effort made up of local, regional and national foundations, individual donors, nonprofit organizations and county public officials. Together, we share a vision and commitment of strengthening the nonprofit sector in Prince George’s County, as well as enhancing the impact and efficiency of regional philanthropic investment in the county.

Our unique collaborative effort was officially launched in January 2008 after a series of five county-wide forums held in 2006/2007. These forums were co-sponsored by the Washington Grantmaker’s Sustainable Communities Working Group and the Prince George’s Community Foundation, a regional affiliate of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.

Featured Partner: Human Services Coalition of Prince George’s County

In an effort to broaden both the Partnership’s depth and reach into the county’s nonprofit sector, a close collaborative relationship with the Human Services Coalition (HSC) was launched. The Partnership made a proactive $25,000 grant to the HSC to invest in building its advocacy capacity, as well as support its upcoming strategic planning process.

$150,000 in Capacity Building Funding awarded in June 2008

According to a report by the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, nearly 85% of the nonprofits in the county across service sectors have budgets of $25,000 or less; and many of the those with larger budgets are significantly reliant on government grants, and therefore are not focused on – or have capacity to generate – nongovernmental funding.

Based on the findings of the various forums held by the Partnership in 2006/2007, it became clear that many of the issues facing the nonprofit sector in Prince George’s County needed to be addressed at the policy level within county government since a large percentage of nonprofits receive substantial county funding. This funding dynamic has created rather significant confusion on the part of many of the county’s nonprofits (i.e. status as a quasi government agency rather than that of a stand-alone nonprofit organization) as well as an unfair power dynamic for those nonprofits with a sense of clarity in terms of what needs to happen at the county level relative to nonprofit funding.

But before nonprofit organizations can tackle the larger county budget issues and ultimately earn a much needed collective voice at the decision-making table, they need to be the strongest and most efficiently run they can be?which is why the initial funding from the Partnership is focused exclusively on capacity building. Specifically, the Partnership is focused on nonprofits with budgets of $50,000 to $1.5 million and located in and/or serving the inner beltway communities of Prince George’s County.

Meet our inaugural group of capacity building grant recipients that were cumulatively awarded just under $150,000 in June 2008.
